Ever wonder if people notice whether you have a defining and unique dress style? It’s important to keep style in mind when dressing as it creates a part of your own brand for those around you. It’s also a way to show a comfortable and consistent look for others with whom you interact on a regular basis.
I like to keep a business style at work that blends a mix of tones, fits, and accessories that can be used across different outfits. I find it easy to use two to three different suits in solid or patterned fabric wool or a twill/cotton blend which is perfect for any occasion. If I am traveling, I prefer to use twill cotton fabric suit which do not wrinkle. They are a huge time saver and can be worn with the matching trousers, a crisp white or light blue or gingham shirt and a silk tie (solid, dotted or striped), my favorite bluchers or cap toe dress shoes. What makes the cotton fabric so versatile is that it just as well can be dressed down for after work hours. Think denim, for example, especially a dark rinse jean, which can easily be paired up with the suit jacket. Ditch the tie and opt for a pocket square to accessorize and you got yourself a feasible option for cocktail hour, the bar, or dinner with clients or colleagues.
With the winter weather months approaching, I am slowly transitioning to wool fabric suiting for my go-to suiting for the office. I own several wool suits in different colors. The one thing to give you the distinctive look and style you desire is your choice of patterns. Micro dot wool is a perfect, unique pattern. Want to opt for a more contemporary or classic blend? Go for the window pane pattern which is phenomenal for contrasting with solid shirts or striped ties. Many guys feel wool can be a little itchy, too warm or uncomfortable. Not so anymore! There are plenty of good wool suits available out there for a decent price that can give you the style and distinction you desire without breaking the bank!
As for casual style, always think simple. Less is more. Consider owning pieces that can be worn with more than one garment. The staple items you should always have in your closet include: dark denim jeans (they go with everything), solid t-shirts in white, navy, black or charcoal and a light color of your choice (hopefully that matches your skin tone). In addition, you want to have a soft sweater to layer. Cashmere (yes, the stuff from the goat’s beard) is the perfect, soft gem that adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit. And last, consider a great pair of clean, classic oxfords or cap toe bluchers (preferably in dark colors that can be matched easily with other items) and a pair of your favorite kicks! And of course, who can forget a pair or two shorts (long enough to hang just above or below your knees) and a pair of flip flops.
Creating your own unique style does not need to be complicated or expensive. It should have your taste and a hint of class and comfort. Don’t be afraid to try on new things while staying true to what you know looks good on you. You’d be surprised of the outcome.
